Contest Overview

In Conjunction with the Smart Museum of Art, we are challenging you, our students, staff and faculty, to best represent life and learning at The University of Chicago. Any aspect of the University experience may be considered for subject matter (e.g., student life, research, academics, history, community, our faculty) but there must be a reflection of the university’s relationship to art production in Chicago and in the larger “heartland” of this country. We hope this will inspire you to be wildly creative—no genre is out of bounds, no format too unique. Animation, film, video, stop motion, photo montage, noir, horror, romance, abstract art, documentary. Amaze us. (And don’t forget to watch the 2009 promo video created by last year’s grand prize winner, Justin Staple! For more information about the Heartland exhibit at Smart, click here.)

Rules

Any University of Chicago student of the College, graduate program or professional school, staff or faculty member may participate. The video can use any audio/visual multimedia (e.g., video, flash, animation, cell phone, slideshow) as long as the work is created for this contest and be one minute or less. Winners must provide entries on mini-DV, DVcam or DVD Subject matter should be original, relevant to the category, and suitable for distribution. The best submissions will reflect your ability to express ideas and artfully convey a message about what “Heart of Chicago” means to you. Videos can be of any genre, format and aesthetic, ranging from dramatic to art to documentary.

How to Submit

Submissions will be accepted from October 5 until November 6 and all entries must be in a digital format, uploaded to YouTube. Participants must then provide the link via a simple online submission form available below. All entries will appear on the Chicago IN:60 Seconds web page as part of the Chicago Studies site.

Judging

The panel of judges will be assembled from a pool of faculty, staff and affiliates who have expertise in cinema studies, documentary production and the film/entertainment industry. This group will choose a first, second and third place.

In addition, from the Chicago IN:60 Seconds web page, members of the University community at large (e.g., students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends) will be able to view entries and vote for their favorite once all the videos have been posted. Submissions with the most votes will be awarded an “Audience favorite” award. Encourage your friends and family to visit the site to cast their vote beginning November 9!

Finalist works will be premiered and winners will be announced during a collaborative event with Smart Museum of Art on November 12 from 5:30-7:30pm. The free screening and reception will include an opportunity for winners to take the stage to accept the award and say a few words.

Prizes

As determined by the panel of judges, 1st place will receive $500, 2nd place $200 and 3rd place $100. The “Audience Favorite” will win the esteemed “Rising Phoenix” award.
