The City of the Third Coast

A Chicago Futures Distinguished Lecture with Clare Lyster and Neil Brenner

As urbanization increases across the United States, could the distinctions between cities, states, and even countries become secondary to other analytic scales for purposes of economic and urban planning, policy-making, and conservation?  “The City of the Third Coast” takes place in this speculative space, in a not-so-distant future in which Chicago is less considered on its own, and more as a “jewel in the crown” of an urbanized mega-region centered on the drainage basins of the five Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence River.  How does our understanding of the future of the City by the Lake change, when described from this new vantage point, and at this new scale?

This distinguished lecture – the final of our Winter series – puts cutting-edge urban theorist Neil Brenner (recently arrived at UChicago) in dialogue with architect, writer, and UIC professor Clare Lyster about the recently published volume Third Coast Atlas:  Prelude to a Plan, co-edited by Lyster with Daniel Ibañez, Charles Waldheim, and Mason White.  Join them for a conversation that will expands your understanding not only of the future of Chicago, but of cities in an increasingly globalized, urban world.

Clare Lyster is an architect, writer, and professor at UIC. She has written multiple books on the topic, as well as serving as co-editor of the Third Coast Atlas, a book from which much of this conversation will be drawn.

Neil Brenner is a critical urban theorist, sociologist and geographer who is interested in all aspects of research on cities and urbanization within the social sciences, the environmental humanities, the design disciplines and environmental studies. His recent works include New Urban Spaces: Urban Theory and the Scale Question.
