The Court Theatre, founded in 1955 as an amateur outdoor theatre, has grown in size and scope since inception. The Court Theatre has since developed a tradition of translating and adapting classic texts, built Abelson Auditorium, and become incorporated as a nonprofit organization.
In 2013 the Court established the Center for Classic Theatre as an institution designed to examine what it means to be a theater at a large research institution. In addition, the creation of the Court's Faculty Advisory Council fosters a mix of scholarly and theatrical analysis of classic works in an effort to bring new and exciting interpretations to the stage.
