Southeast Chicago Bike Tour

In the second of our new Vamonde tours, we explore Chicago's Southeast Side with Professor John Mark Hansen

Take a ride through Chicago's Southeast Side with the University of Chicago's John Mark Hansen (avid biker, Charles L. Hutchinson Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Political Science, and author of "The City in a Garden: A Guide to the History of Hyde Park and Kenwood"). This 16-mile circuit, which reproduces and then extends Chicago Studies' annual spring Southeast Chicago History Bike Tour, explores the forces that have shaped the region's economy, politics, and culture.  Special extension tours invite your further exploration of South Deering, East Side, and Whiting, IN.

Although this tour is available to desktop/virtual participants, we strongly encourage its completion as intended -- on a bicycle, using the FREE Vamonde app (available on both Apple and Android devices) to provide guidance along the way. To facilitate this, an embedded audio version of each post's text is available for mobile Vamonde users, found on the lower-left side of each post when viewed in the app.  The tour begins at Regenstein Library, and continues southeast through Jackson Park, East Side, South Chicago, and South Shore neighborhoods.  A map of the tour and its stops can be found here.

This tour was created by John Mark Hansen, and produced by Thomas Daniels on behalf of Chicago Studies during summer 2020. The tour and its content are available either in the Vamonde app (available in your app store) or via this link (using your favorite web browser)

NOTE: The Vamonde app has been deprecated by Chicago Studies and while archived content is still available, new tour content will be found exclusively on our website.
