Carver 47 Food and Wellness Market

Driven by the idea that food is medicine as much as it is art, C47 offers a cafe experience like no other

Founded by business leader Monica Haslip over twenty years ago, Little Black Pearl was created to help young people understand the connections between business, education, and art. An adjacent (literally) project to Little Black Pearl, Carver 47 was initially launched in 2017. Located at the corner of Greenwood and 47th Street, Carver 47 is meant to function as a common space with healthy food options and an inviting southern touch. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, Carver 47 pays homage to the botanist and scientist, Dr. George Washington Carver.

The ultimate goal of the C47 cafe is to expose visitors and customers to the impressive history of Dr. Carver. Concerned about how his legacy had reduced him to the “peanut man,” Haslip and Wright wanted C47 to serve as a space where, on top of relaxing and enjoying nourishing bites, patrons learned more about the contributions Black individuals have made to society over the centuries, specifically within the United States. Headed by a professional chef and vocalist Lizz Wright, Carver 47 aims to promote the wellbeing of its surrounding Bronzeville community by ensuring that they support local farms and family businesses. By cultivating a menu that focuses on wholesome foods and drinks, Carver 47 achieves this aim.

With a variety of fresh juices, coffees, teas, all-day breakfast, lunch items, and baked goods, Carver 47 can satiate the stomach and fuel the work of any student studying for midterms or writing a paper. Wirth a relaxed atmosphere and warm decor, make sure to check out this space when in need of a study spot and a reminder of the great contributions made by Dr. Carver to our society.
