Chicago- and Illinois-Specific COVID-19 Information

Review all of the guidelines of how to be safe in transit to or from and within public spaces on our Safety webpage. In following best practices for keeping yourself safe, you are on your way to ensuring that the whole Hyde Park and greater Chicago community may also be safe.

Health Guidelines

  • The Illinois Department of Public Health mandates that everyone over the age of 2 who can physically tolerate wearing a mask must do so in all public spaces where social distancing of at least 6 feet is not possible.
    • Mask wearing is the best way to prevent the spread of coronavirus from the mask wearer to others in the surrounding area. This is particularly useful if a person is asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic.
  • The CDC recommends that people wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
    • Especially after going to the bathroom, before and after eating, and after coughing or sneezing.
    • If hand washing is unavailable, people should use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Quarantining

  • Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot mandates 14-day quarantine after arrival or return to Chicago from certain states.  This list updates each Tuesday, with changes taking effect the following Friday.
  • For the most current list of states with travel restrictions/quarantine requirements in effect, visit this City of Chicago website.
  • Mayor Lightfoot encourages an “honor system” of enforcement.  However, the University of Chicago's COVID-19 policy, as attested to by all members of the University community, requires adherence to this policy.
