Eating & Shopping

This fall, we wish for everyone in the Chicago community to use city resources like restaurants and grocery stores--but it is imperative to do so with the utmost safety. Below are resources for shopping and eating out that prioritize personal and collective health and safety.

Supporting Local Businesses

Now more than ever, it is crucial that we as Chicagoans patronize local businesses like grocery stores and restaurants. Here are some resources to help you find those in your community.

  • Shop In Place Chicago: Built by UChicago Law students, this locator helps you search local businesses of all kinds by ZIP code or address.
  • Dining at a Distance: Search for restaurants that are offering socially-distanced dining in Chicago.
  • Resources to Help the Community: Includes ways to donate food and other materials, but also how to access those for you and your community.

Health and Safety Precautions

If you are feeling unwell at all before going out to eat or shop, do not go.

Eating Out

  • Phase 4 of the "Restore Illinois" plan provides for the limited reopening of restaurants for outdoor seating.
  • Follow safety procedures outlined by the Chicago and Illinois governments, and by specific establishments themselves.
  • When possible, order food from restaurants for delivery or takeout.
  • Wear a face mask whenever you interact with a food delivery or storefront employee.
  • Tip your food and/or delivery workers!
  • After receiving a meal from a restaurant, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Shopping

  • Many grocery stores have delivery services or use third-party services such as Instacart--check if that is available if you are able to.
  • Always wear a mask, and wear gloves when possible, when going to the store.
  • Maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet between you and other customers, where possible.
  • Use contactless payment in stores as much as possible.
  • After returning from the grocery store, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
