Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art

Featuring contemporary takes on Ukrainian culture

Similar to the goals of the Ukrainian National Museum, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art seeks to preserve Ukrainian culture by showcasing artwork emblematic of the unique Ukrainian American experience. Recently, the museum has been focused on developing an educational center for up-and-coming artists. On top of showcasing artwork and furthering the education of artists-in-the-making, the museum hosts lectures, readings, music events, and film screenings.

The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art was established in 1971 by Dr. Achilles, Vera Chreptowsky, Konstantin Milonadis, and Mychajlo Urban. Achilles and Vera were art collectors, while Milonadis and Urban were sculptors. This team of four saw a need for contemporary artists to have a space to showcase their work. There was a lack of representation for artists who did not fit into mainstream expectations. Thus, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art was born in an effort to provide an alternative space for artists.

While the museum provides a space for artists of Ukrainian origin or descent, it also highlights Chicago-based Ukrainian artists, as well as Canadian artists. Since 1978, the Museum’s permanent collection has come to include the works of many Ukrainian or Chicago-based Ukrainian artists, including Alexander Archipenko, Alexis Gritchenko, Mychajlo Andreenko, Jerzy Nowosielski, Jules Olitski, Patrick Caulfield, Elisabeth Frink, Mary Fedden, Richard Hunt, Thomas Kapsalis, Michiko Itatani, and many others.
