The 62nd Street Garden

This urban garden is committed to giving back

Located on 62nd Street between Kenwood and Dorchester, the 62nd Street Community Garden has been a Woodlawn asset since 2010. In 2014, the garden became part of NeighborSpace. As Chicago’s only nonprofit urban land trust, NeighborSpace seeks to help preserve, maintain, and sustain community gardens by taking ownership of the land housing the garden. This allows for NeighborSpace to take care of insurance, protect the land against any and all development, provide water for the plots, and provide technical and stewardship support to the community members who wish to use the garden.

The 62nd Street Community Garden grows organic crops, with a focus on vegetable production. Committed to giving back to nearby residents, many of the garden’s members participate in the KAM Isaiah Israel Gleaning Program, wherein excess produce is donated to the local Hyde Park Kenwood Food Pantry. Additionally, there are garden boxes lining the sidewalks with the produce available for neighbors to harvest. While the garden is cleaned up and cleared during winter months (beginning in the middle of November), the 62nd Street Community Garden serves as a great example of the many successful and accessible urban gardens within the Woodlawn neighborhood.
